Indigenous Cultural Language Workshop In Recognition Of National Day For Truth And Reconciliation
In recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Pushor Mitchell invited Jasmine Peone, teacher and knowledge carrier, to conduct an Indigenous language workshop at the firm.
Attendees learned the correct pronunciation and meaning behind the nsyilxcn words for earth, water, Ogopogo, Okanagan, Penticton and Kelowna, and played interactive games to help with recall. Jasmine shared the history of the Syilx nation, its boundaries, and how they came to be. The workshops were complemented by lunch from Kekuli Cafe, West Kelowna.
Throughout the month, the firm has shared information internally about local Indigenous groups and their languages; Education in law schools and within the Law Society about Indigenous Peoples & Culture; Indigenous historic preservation within our local museums; and the BC Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
We’ve welcomed this opportunity to share information and learn more about the culture and history of our Indigenous peoples.
