Why did you become a lawyer?

I decided to become a lawyer while in my undergrad program at the University of Alberta.  I was studying criminology and some of the issues we were dealing with were legal issues.  In some classes, the most interesting questions raised by students were questions that the professor could not answer because she said they were questions a lawyer would need to answer.  I found those issues the most interesting so I thought going to law school and being a lawyer would be an interesting career.

What is the focus of your law practice?

I have a litigation practice.  This means that I help people resolve disputes, with a focus in personal injury and employment law.  I also represent clients involved in insurance disputes, contract disputes and real estate disputes.

If you weren’t a lawyer, what profession would you like to attempt?

Well, assuming I had the talent, a professional athlete would be great.  You get paid to stay in shape and play a game you already love.  However, more realistically, because I love the ocean and scuba diving and surfing, I would really enjoy working in a job that lets me be in the ocean.  Marine Biology would be a fascinating field.

If you weren’t a lawyer, what profession would you never do?

I would never want to be a car salesman. I was not cut out to be a salesperson of any kind!

Your favourite technology tool?

It sounds like a cliché but my Blackberry is a great tool.  I don’t use it as extensively as some, but the fact that I can see what is going with my files/clients while out of the office means less stress when I am back in the office.

What is the first thing you check each morning?

In the winter, apart from work emails, the first thing I check in the morning is the Big White ski report.

What are people most surprised to learn about you?

People are often surprised to learn that I am a litigation lawyer because they seem to expect that I should be a lot louder personality.

Your biggest extravagance?

My biggest extravagance is travel.

Your favourite food and drink?

I love sandwiches and could eat them most days of the week.  My favorite drink is diet Coke.

Your favourite motto?

Work Hard, play hard is a great motto.  Law can be a demanding and stressful job so my wife and I moved to the Okanagan to take advantage of the outdoor lifestyle when not in the office.
