Adoption

We know that the adoption process is as unique as the individuals who are involved in it, and that it can be filled with both joy and uncertainty. We take time to understand your situation and explain the legal process. We are sensitive to the needs of all the parties in the adoption process. Adoption in British Columbia is governed by the Adoption Act. Only the provincial Ministry of Children and Family Development or one of several non-profit licensed adoption Agencies are authorized to facilitate adoptions between persons who are unknown to each other. There are several ways to adopt children in British Columbia which include:

  • Adopting a waiting child in British Columbia, usually through the Ministry
  • Adopting a newborn child through the Ministry or an Agency
  • Adopting a child from another country, usually through an Agency
  • Direct placement by the birth parent or parents with adoptive parent or parents known to them
  • Adoption by relatives of the child
  • Adoption by stepparents in a second marriage.
