The Canadian Bar Association (CBA ) has shown leadership in Canada in supporting the rule of law and demonstrating solidarity with lawyers and judges in Pakistan. On Nov. 25, the CBA organized a march in downtown Ottawa to the Supreme Court of Canada, led by President Bernard Amyot of Montreal. Close to 300 lawyers added their voices to the worldwide call for an end to emergency rule and the restoration of the rule of law in that country.
The momentum grew and on Nov. 29, more than 400 members of the legal community participated in a rally in front of Toronto’s historic Osgoode Hall, calling for the return to the rule of law in Pakistan. The gathering was organized jointly by the CBA’s Ontario Branch and the Law Society of Upper Canada.
On Nov. 30, lawyers across British Columbia joined with the Executive of the B.C. Branch in wearing black as a symbol of support for the rule of law and those who are fighting to protect it in Pakistan and around the world. In a similar vein, CBA-Newfoundland organized a day of lawyers wearing black on Friday, Dec. 7 in an expression of support for their Pakistani colleagues.
