Employees Losing Control Of Personal Lives

The latest figures from the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) show that 58 per cent of Canadians say they feel overwhelmed by pressures from work, home, family, friends, physical health and community service.  Increasing numbers feel their jobs completely control their lives and they are unable to take that control back.

BDO Dunwoody, in a recent edition of its electronic newsletter, News Flash, says that's bad news for business.  Estimates put the costs of employee burnout to Canadian businesses at $12 to $14 billion a year in health claims, lost productivity, absenteeism and leave due to stress.  According to the CMHA, disability costs represent 12 per cent of payroll costs, with mental health claims the fastest growing category.
