British Columbia’s legislation to eliminate the practice of mandatory retirement has now passed second and third reading in the B.C. Legislature and has received Royal Assent. This legislation will remove the upper limit of 65 from the definition of “age” in the B.C. Human Rights Code. The impact will be that employers will, with certain limitations, no longer be allowed to discriminate against older employees on the basis of age.
This change to B.C.’s human rights legislation will come into effect on January 1, 2008.
