Overview
Our firm has a tradition of growth by the attraction and development of articled students and young lawyers. Most of our partners joined our firm early in their legal careers. We believe that in this way we can foster and develop our team approach to the practice of law. In the following paragraphs we will discuss our articling and associate recruitment procedures and the advantages of a legal career with Pushor Mitchell LLP.
Articling Program
Introduction
If you have read about our firm on this website you will recognize that we are a very team oriented firm that considers every applicant as a potential partner. We do not hire articling students unless we believe there is a good chance that they will be kept on after the successful completion of their articles.
Applications
We normally take on one student at a time. We do not take a student every year. We begin receiving applications approximately one and half years before the anticipated commencement of articles. We commence interviews of qualified candidates immediately. We are not involved in any matching programs. Our articling committee short lists candidates and conducts interviews. Its hiring recommendations are subject to the approval of the full partnership. Applicants should send their applications to the attention of the Articling Committee. The following information should be included with your application:
- Transcripts of all post secondary education (we encourage you to provide explanatory notes if you feel that your marks are not representative of your success or standing in law school);
- A resume including information on extra-curricular activities and interests;
- Letters of reference (no more than three);
- Samples of writing (preferably legal).
Criteria
We have no formal criteria for evaluating applicants. We do consider law school marks to be important but we do not rule out applicants on the basis of marks alone. We consider personality, work experience, industriousness, creativity, and outside interests. The interview by the articling committee is the single most important factor. We do not favour students from any particular law school. We have partners and associates from all across Canada.
Articling Program
Under our Law Society rules all students must complete the Professional Legal Training Course. We prefer that this be completed prior to our in house articles commencing.
The firm pays PLTC tuition fees as well as student's salary while at the course. Salaries are reviewed annually and are competitive with the salaries paid elsewhere in the province. Immediately upon commencement of articles (commencement of PLTC) students are enrolled on our comprehensive group benefits program which includes medical and dental benefits.
We do not have a formal rotation system but we do ensure that our students receive well-rounded articles. We encourage immediate client contact and have our students work with other lawyers on files. There is a research component as well but this is a small part of the work of our articled students.
We have several practice areas in the firm including: Tax; Labour and Employment; Insolvency; Personal Injury Litigation; Corporate Commercial; Securities; Wills and Estates; Family; Real Estate; Technology Law; Criminal Litigation and Civil Litigation. Our students are exposed to practical experience in all of these areas. We do not expect that students decide their practice preferences until well after their articles have concluded. We do not discourage general practices in the first few years of practice.
Our students have their own offices and their own computer. They attend monthly partners and associates meetings. Students are also encouraged to attend continuing legal education seminars and bar association and other social functions, which for the most part, are paid for by the firm.
Summer Students
We do hire summer students. We encourage you to apply having regard to the criteria set out above. We give preference to students who are seriously interested in articling with us.
Associate Employment
We are always interested in taking on associates in their first few years of practice particularly if they can supplement one of our established practice areas. Our needs vary from time to time and we would encourage you to contact us if you are interested in employment with us. You should direct your inquiries to the attention to the Associates Recruitment Committee. We understand the importance of confidentiality with all such inquiries.
Some of the benefits of employment with Pushor Mitchell LLP are as follows:
- Competitive salary;
- Reasonably fast access to partnership;
- First-class modern facilities and computer technology;
- Comprehensive benefits coverage;
- Credit card for promotional use;
