Greg Pratch was recently profiled on KelownaNow.com’s In Focus which recognizes people, businesses and organizations that make our city great.

What is your name?

Greg Pratch

What do you always find yourself saying?

As a lawyer, when clients ask me questions, I often start by saying to them “…well, that depends”

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select and why?

I think it would have to be Elon Musk. He’s a visionary with big ideas, and he genuinely seems to want to use his business skill and experience to solve problems facing our society.

If you were to receive any existing public award, what award would you like to win?

Some kind of community leadership award. I think it’s important to get involved with causes and organizations that interest you in order and that you can contribute time and skills to. Or, maybe an award for best ski line of the year?

If you could spend a day with any historical figure, who would you choose and why?

Um. . . . maybe one of the Wright brothers. It would be interesting to talk to them about how they pursued their idea for flight and persevered despite many failures and at a time when the thought of human beings flying was considered crazy. I often wonder which ideas we hear about today that society considers crazy will eventually become reality, just like the Wright brothers accomplished.

Who inspires you?

Many people inspire me. In my professional life, I am inspired by lawyers who are able to vigorously pursue their client’s legal position, while at the same time showing respect and professional courtesy to an opposing lawyer, the other party, etc. Thankfully, the vast majority of lawyers I encounter are like this so I can honestly say that I am inspired often! As an outdoor enthusiast who loves skiing, mountain biking and scuba diving, I am inspired by people who have dedicated their lives to these activities, often risking their lives, to progress these sports to levels we never thought possible.

What are three things on your bucket list?

Heli-skiing in Alaska, learning how to sail, doing an African safari

If you had an enormous yacht, what would you name it?

Where to Next?

What are you passionate about?

Travel, skiing, the natural environment and my friends and family

What has been your favourite day of your life, up to this point?

I’ve had many amazing days – first time I finally got to go heli-skiing, attending my bar call ceremony in Edmonton, simple gatherings with friends and family – these were all great days. However, one that stands out is right after I proposed to my wife at a ski festival in Whistler, we went bungee jumping and then out for an evening in Whistler.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?

Completing law school and finally being called to the bar. It sounds cliché, but it was a long road and it felt great to finally complete that process.

Where is your favourite place to dine in Kelowna? What do you like about it?

Mama Rosa’s – I love Italian food and they do it well.

What is your favourite activity or event in Kelowna? Why?

That’s a hard one. We moved here for the outdoor activities and Kelowna has everything. We spend lots of time skiing, mountain biking, hiking and swimming in the lake.

What is the name of your business/organization?

I am lawyer and partner with Pushor Mitchell LLP.

Where can people find you or your business online?

Our firm website is www.pushormitchell.com

What does your business/organization do?

Our firm is made up of over 30 lawyers and more than 70 other staff members. We have lawyers that practice in almost all areas of the law. I am a litigation lawyer meaning I assist clients involved in a dispute. My areas of focus are personal injury, tax disputes and employment disputes.

What is your mission?

To provide clients with strong legal representation while offering practical solutions to their legal problems. Sometimes that might mean working on ways to settle a dispute without having to resort to the Courts, other times it might mean that Court is the only way to bring the matter to a conclusion. My goal is to ensure the matter is resolved for my client in the most effective and efficient manner possible.

If you could achieve one thing within your field, what would it be?

I want to ensure I have a reputation as a lawyer with strong legal skills and a dedicated work effort for every client I represent.

Where do you want your business/organization to be in five years?

For me personally, I want my practice to continue to grow and evolve. For my firm as a whole, there will always be new faces joining Pushor Mitchell and it is important that the legal services we offer remain of the highest caliber. We have very talented lawyers and staff working within the organization right now and in five years, I want that to remain unchanged.

What three qualities do you feel that your business/organization exemplifies?

Talented people
Commitment to the community we serve
Innovative

What would you like to say to your employees/volunteers?

Our law firm could not succeed without the commitment and work ethic of our employees. It is truly a team effort to ensure our clients receive the highest level of legal service possible.

How does your business/organization impact the community?

Our firm and its individual lawyers and staff dedicate thousands of combined hours every year to community organizations, ranging from education, to cancer research, to theatre and the arts. Community involvement is a big part of our firm culture.

If I could change one thing about Kelowna, it would be:

I’m a big Edmonton Oilers fan so if Kelowna could be closer to Edmonton (but of course not closer to Edmonton weather!)

What do you think makes Kelowna great?

For a small city, it has so much to offer. Great wineries, unique dining opportunities, outdoor lifestyle and a strong entrepreneurial spirit.

My choice for the Kelowna In Focus spotlight is:

Julia DeBolt – local realtor and outdoor enthusiast like me.
